An enterprising 16-year-old and I started a newspaper just five months ago.

In January, we will be featured in Editor & Publisher magazine.

It has been a whirlwind. Michael is a high school student, band member, thespian, and debate team member. He is the king of hustle culture.

I work full-time as a research librarian and have community group commitments.

We both work our tails off with hot-button local stories, such as the proposed demolition of the historic dirt racetrack at the Kansas State Fairgrounds. We cover the board of education, city council, and county commission meetings. I cover the “fun” beat — arts and culture.

We have a few contractors and contributors who write cooking columns, which are wildly popular in this area.

We don’t get much sleep.

We formed an LLC. Michael is the publisher. I am the business advisor, mentoring him about cash flows, balance sheets, expenses and investments, and other details of entrepreneurship.

Michael appeared on Editor & Publisher owner Mike Blinder’s vodcast two weeks ago.

In January, we will be featured in the magazine itself.

It’s a huge honor, and we are thankful for the tremendous reception the public has extended to us by supporting us morally and through purchasing subscriptions.

We believe that we are building a better community. The work is hard, but the payoff is amazing.
